Elm

GENUS: ULMUS

These historic specimens are among the tallest trees in the Sacramento skyline and were some of the first to make Sacramento the City of Trees. Many of these leafy beauties are well over 100 years old. Since Dutch elm disease (DED) arrived in the region in 1990, we have lost the majority of the original elms. However, our volunteer Save the Elms Program Community Scientists help monitor for symptoms of DED to prevent the spread of disease so we can enjoy them as long as possible.

Characteristics

Color / Appearance

Heartwood is light to medium reddish brown. Paler sapwood is usually well defined.

Grain / Texture

Grain is interlocked (making it very resistant to splitting), with a somewhat coarse, uneven texture.

Workability

Can be a challenge to work with because of interlocked grain, especially on quartersawn surfaces. Planing can cause tearout and/or fuzzy surfaces. Poor dimensional stability. Glues, stains, and finishes well. Responds well to steam bending, and holds nails and screws well.

Common Uses

Boxes, baskets, furniture, hockey sticks, veneer, archery bows, and paper (pulpwood).
